The Hivemapper Network is designed to protect people's privacy while collecting imagery to build and update a global map. Your personal information and location data are not the product being monetized. The Hivemapper Network is building a private and anonymous mapping network.
What is Collected?
The Hivemapper Dashcam is an open source product that collects information in a privacy centric manner. The primary pieces of data it collects includes:
Contributor’s username are anonymous and location is never publicly tied to a username.
Privacy Blurring
Automatically blurs faces, license plates, cars, and bodies from the imagery.
Edge Processing
We automatically blur faces, license plates, etc. and detect objects (e.g. speed limit signs) at the edge.
Privacy Zones
Personal and network level privacy zones where all data collection is automatically paused.
No Personal Info Collected
We never have and never will collect personal information from contributors to the map.
Transparency that respects local laws
In certain countries you are required to display a placard on your vehicle indicating that you are collecting for a map. See here for the countries and placards.

People can inspect the code and see what data is being collected and how it’s being collected, see here.

How long is the imagery kept for?
1 year from the point of collection, sometimes less.
Can I map anywhere?
You can map in any country, but within privacy zones (eg military bases) all data collection is automatically paused.
Does the Hivemapper Dashcam or App include 3rd party analytics?
The Hivemapper Dashcam and the Hivemapper App for iPhone and Android do not send behavioral data to 3rd parties.
Can the dashcam see my personal car garage?
By default mapping is paused in the first 100M of every trip and users can set personal privacy zones around specific locations.
Can people see where a specific contributor is collecting?
No, each contributor has an anonymous username and no location data is publicly tied to this username.
Is all imagery privacy blurred?
Yes, all imagery is privacy blurred at the edge and Hivemapper is never in possession of un-blurred imagery.
Request Takedown
Hivemapper can assist with blurring or deletion of personal information that is inadvertently collected by the network. If you would like to request that a face, license plate, or your own house be removed, please complete this form.
